Removing Dropplets, using Hugo with Netlify

I’ve really struggled with finding a blogging set up that I like. I’ve been looking for one that is easy to work with, works well, and doesn’t cost a lot of money. I have a bunch of blog posts written, in markdown, so the ability to port over my existing work easily is a huge plus. I’ve messed around with a bunch of options, like: wordpress not as technical as I want less customizable (this may have changed since the last time I used it because it’s been years) svbtle too much work to port over my other blog posts costs money Dropplets (I used this until this new change) spammed me with emails to change my password the way I had set it up also needed me to ftp files over to a server to host them, which was tedious and doesn’t work as well when I travel with a different laptop.

Day 28: The Stable Marriage Problem

Today I read an article about the residency match process for med school graduates and how placement is decided by an algorithm. I decided to look more into it. The problem is called the Stable Marriage Problem, and describes a situation where two groups of people (in the med school case schools and applicants; in this case men and women) rate their partners in order of preference, and marriages aren’t “stable” until each man or woman is paired with the best partner possible.

Day 27: Python Excel Work

At work I’ve been doing a lot with Python when I can. I’ve been working with another analyst and some engineers to plan a Python course for analysts so that our department will knew how to read and write Python code. I think it’s a very useful language for Data Analytics, and it will allow us to do a lot of things that many didn’t think were possible. I’ve also been working on a project of my own using openpyxl.

Day 26: Baking Bread!

So, this past weekend - I baked bread! It didn’t turn out the best, burnt a little bit in the oven.. but I did it! I’ve been wanting to bake bread for a while. My mom gave me a the Sono Baking Company cookbook a while ago, and I read all the way through it last week and found so many recipes that I want to bake… I feel like in a second life I would have been a baker.

Day 25: New Years Resolutions

So many months after I started this project I feel the need to finish it - it’s been very busy these past few months with work, events, the holidays… With the new year I feel inspired to build some cool stuff and learn some new skills. I want to get through these last posts both for closure and for a new beginning - This has been a great goal for the last part of 2014, and although I haven’t been able to keep up with the 30 day limit I originally made, I will have made 30 posts that I would not have written in the first place.

Day 24: Mini Pecan Pies for Thanksgiving

Wanted to get a quick post out there since it’s been a while. Over Thanksgiving I helped out with baking some of the pies for our meal, and decided instead of doing a full pecan pie that we should try to do minis! We used a recipe from the Food Network for the filling, and used a premade crust. I used a large goblet wine glass that my parents have to cut circles in the pie crust, then placed them in the bottom of a muffin tin to shape them into little pies.

Day 23: Amadeus Hack@1050

One of the more interesting events I went to was last weekend (the weekend of the 8th) - I went with a bunch of friends to Amadeus Hack@1050, a hackathon in Waltham hosted by Amadeus. There weren’t that many people there, but there was a ton of good food. We came in with ideas of what we wanted to work on, and one of the teammembers recommended we build the backend in Rails.

Day 22: Working through Django

It’s been confusing working through Django and sifting through the tutorials, but I think that I’m starting to get the hang of it! Today I’ve been working on getting my Hangman app up and running. My friend Jake taught me more about how to set up apps in Django and gave me some pointers, so I was able to actually get something functional up and running. Right now my app has a database which holds each game.

Day 21: Starting a Web App in Django

I’m currently working on making a web app using Django, which is a Python web framework for rapid development. I’ve never built a working web app before - I’ve dabbled in different things (Heroku, Handlebars, other random things) but it never was that appealing to me. I love Python as a programming language, and I’m liking using it for developing this app as well. So much of this project so far has just been getting things set up and working on my laptop.

Day 20: Mini Apple Pies

I made the cutest apple pies - I (still) have applies left over from apple picking, and I had bought some pie crust recently that I wanted to use up. I didn’t feel like baking a full pie because it’s hard to share at work and requires a lot of time, so I decided to try out this recipe I found online: http://www.freutcake.com/in-the-kitchen/mini-caramel-apple-hand-pies/. They turned out really well! I just didn’t add the caramel in because I don’t have any but the proportion of spices to apples to crust worked well.
